Getting dogs out into a great dog-friendly environment like the Farmer’s Market is a wonderful way to introduce people to adoptable dogs and the dogs have a lot of fun.
This weekend we took Joel and Maggie to the Haile Farmer’s Market. Joel is nervous around people but loves dogs and cats. Maggie loves all people and dogs, and isn’t scared of anything.
The two of them were a perfect pair. Maggie gave Joel confidence and drew him out. Both of them loved meeting all of the friendly dogs at the market, and Joel opened up to new people more than ever before. (Read Joel’s long but happy story)
Everyone responded really well to them, and they got a lot of interest. Hopefully, someone that they met will adopt or foster them or another dog at ACAS! Dogs like these may not shine in the shelter, but when they’re out in public everyone can see how sweet and goofy they are.
This is also a great way to change the public perception around pit bulls and shelter dogs. When people learned that Joel and Maggie had just met each other and that I and the other volunteer had just met Maggie, they were often surprised. Maggie is a great example of how confident and well-adjusted a shelter dog can be.
As soon as she burned off some energy playing in my yard, Maggie was laid back and easy-going at the market. Joel was so happy to be around so many other dogs that he forgot to be scared most of the time.
We all had a great time, and can’t wait to do it again. Let us know if you would like to come next time, or get involved with these or any other dogs at ACAS!
