Our little Mako shark is our longest-term resident. He has gone several weeks without anyone asking to meet him. He patiently sits in the front of his kennel, greeting everyone with a big smile and wagging tail and cheers on his friends when they get adopted.

He is really, really hoping today will finally be his turn and someone will ask to meet him. Could that person be you? Read about our silly boy below and come in today to meet him!

I’m Mako, and I’m here to make-yo life so much better! When I first arrived at ACAR, it took me a little while to come out of my shell, I came from a very sad cruelty case and still wear a few scars from my past life, but I am very excited to report that I have learned life can be great and have made lots and lots of friends!

I’m a quirky lil fellow and like to store my treats for later, much like a squirrel. I can also bounce when I get happy, much like a kangaroo. I love to play with toys and roll around with a soccer ball, and I’ve made quite a few doggo friends, too!

Sometimes when I’m having fun, I forget to keep my teefers to myself, much like a lil shark, but I’ve been working on my manners and turn into such a snuggle bunny after we play. My foster parents have taught me how to go potty outside only. I also learned sit and shake! If you love to laugh and don’t take life too seriously, I may be the pup for you!

Thanks to the generosity of the Petco Love Foundation, I go home with a $100 Petco gift card!

Since I’m in a foster home, if you would like to meet me, please email foster@alachuacounty.us or call the main office at (352) 264-6870 to arrange for a meet-and-greet with me and my foster parents!”

Mako and another dog got along very well on a dog day out, sharing treats and space without issue. He does great at adoption events as well, and is a lover with the people who show him love.

As I write this, Mako has been in the system for nearly a year.

Dogs who come from difficult pasts, like Mako, often take longer to find that special person who understands them and is willing to take time to bring out the best in them. Being a bully-looking mixed breed and a mostly black dog doesn’t help either, since both of these groups are less likely to get adopted.

Mako keeps getting overlooked. Now that he’s in a foster home, he’s getting the one-on-one attention he needs to be a perfect pet, but it’s harder for him to get the attention he needs to find an adopter. His foster family can likely take another dog out of the shelter if Mako finds his forever home.

Are you the one to bring out Mako’s best?
