I am Manatee, a freshwater hippo who wants to let you in on a little secret….I’m a mermaid. Crazy, I know. But the second the sprinkler comes out, I go BANANAS in the best way possible! I will spend aaaall day running through the sprinkler and trying to grab the water in the air. I’m also a smart girl and know sit, stay, paw, and come, and I believe I’m fully housebroken. I normally go to the door when I need to go potty.
I also love to go on car rides, but it can take me a few minutes to get comfy in new places and with new people, so I do best with slow intros. I am dog friendly but can get overwhelmed with other dogs in my bubble, so I may do best with other laidback pups or as a single pup. When I’m not running through the sprinkler, I enjoy a good teddy bear (well, unstuffing a good teddy bear). Let’s frolic in the sprinklers together forever!

January 2023:
MANATEE’S DDO
Today Manatee had some time away from the shelter and enjoyed the dirt and grass under her feet, I think. She rides well in the car, standing and looking out the windows. She walks remarkably well on a leash, only showing some reactivity when bikes or baby carriages came near us.
She’s pretty easy to redirect. She was not bothered by cars as we walked to 4th Ave Food Park. She doesn’t seek out attention from people but will allow them to pet her if they approach. She’s pretty easy going and has low/med energy, rarely leaving my side as we walked. She’s a very sweet girl who enjoyed all her treats while out and about.
Overall she was just the best, one of the easiest dogs I’ve had on a DDO. She definitely deserves a great home (hopefully with a pool
) and will be a great addition to a family!!

December 2023:
Despite the following plea from the shelter after six months, Manatee still hasn’t found a foster home as she approaches an entire year at the shelter. She’s still a happy, fantastic dog, but a year in the shelter environment could make any dog a little crazy. Here’s what the shelter had to say about Manatee in December:
This 5-year-old cutie absolutely looooves water and would love a home complete with a kiddie pool just for her! She’ll settle for a backyard with a hose too though 😉 On a more serious note, she has been waiting for her forever home since JUNE.
That’s six months spent in a stressful environment — just imagine what that’s like. Can we pretty please find her a cozy home in time for the holidays? She’s such an easygoing, fun pup.
They’re looking for short-term fosters too, so if you’d like to just give Manatee a short break from the shelter, the county shelter would love to make that happen too!
